Folkloriada 2000 Japan

The world Folkloriada are part of the official events of the International Council of Folklore Festival and Traditional Arts Organization. The first Folkloriada were held in 1996 in Netherlands and the second in Japan during the summer of 2000. Like the Olympic games, the Folkloriada are games but cultural ones which build on sharing, respect, harmony and communication between peoples. For 10 days, folklore groups and CIOFF members from over 70 countries and regions who work to preserve their cultural heritage through music, dance, fine arts, crafts, games and traditions meet to present their own culture and exchange with others.
In 1997, the United Nations declared year 2000 – the first of the millennium – the International Year for the Culture of Peace. The second edition of the Folkloriada reflected this wish for peace. The event was held under the theme “Hand in Hand for a Culture of Peace”. As an official event of the International Year for the Culture of Peace, the Folkloriada 2000 played an important role in the culture of peace throughout the world. As organizers said, “Our first motivation is to contribute to friendship and kindness and to respect specific cultures transmitted by human kind to each and everyone throughout the times. It will be our passport to 21st century mankind so peoples of the world can develop a mutual respect and knowledge of each other’s culture, hand in hand, whatever one’s country or nationality.”
Two thematic programs were set up by organizers: “Tsudoi” and “Majiwari”. All participants gathered in the Shibuya/Yoyogi Park in Tokyo for the opening ceremony. The ceremony was followed by a wide array of exchange programs, including a parade, shows starring dances and music of the world, workshops and demonstrations, exhibitions, a market, etc. After the Tsudoi program, participants from many countries were divided in a number of groups and given a guided tour of the Majiwari program. The Majiwari program also included joint shows by Japanese and foreign folklore groups as well as participation in various local festivals, thus creating a better knowledge of the folklore cultures of the participating countries.

"Majiwari" Program
After "Tsudoi" program, the participants from each country were divided into several groups, and they embarked on a visit to various places to participate in the "Majiwari" program. The "Majiwari" program also feature a joint performance between the Japanese folklore groups and the foreign folklore groups as well as the later's participation in the various local festivals, thereby creating a deeper understanding of the folklore cultures of the participants' countries.
