Safeguarding the World’s Rhythm: What is CIOFF®?

If you have ever been mesmerized by a folk festival where dancers from across the globe share their traditions in a whirlwind of color and music, you have likely experienced the work of CIOFF®.

But what exactly is this organization, and why is it so vital to our global culture?

The Guardians of Living Heritage

CIOFF® (the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts) is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) in Official Partnership with UNESCO.

Founded in 1970 in France, its mission is simple yet profound: to promote intangible heritage through music, dance, and folk art. In a world that is rapidly globalizing, CIOFF® ensures that the unique "soul" of every nation its traditional songs, dances, and rituals is not only preserved but celebrated.

The Core Pillars of CIOFF®

CIOFF® operates on a massive scale, connecting over 100 countries through a network of National Sections. Their work focuses on three main areas:

  1. International Folklore Festivals: Every year, CIOFF® umbrellas over 300 international festivals. These aren't just shows; they are platforms for "Cultural Peace," where people from different backgrounds build bridges through shared art.

  2. The World Folkloriada: Often called the "Olympics of Folklore," this flagship event happens every four years. It brings together thousands of participants from all continents to showcase the world’s diversity in one place.

  3. Youth Movement: CIOFF® places a huge emphasis on the next generation. Through the CIOFF® Youth, young people are trained to become the future leaders of cultural preservation.

CIOFF® and UNESCO: A Powerful Alliance

Because of its expertise, CIOFF® holds Associate Status with UNESCO. This means the organization plays a key role in implementing the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

When you see a traditional Polish Polonez or a Perebory weaving pattern being protected and promoted, organizations like CIOFF® are often the ones providing the framework and global stage to keep these traditions alive.

Why It Matters Today

In an era of digital screens, CIOFF® brings us back to what is tangible and human. It promotes:

  • Cultural Diversity: Celebrating what makes us different.

  • A Culture of Peace: Proving that when we dance and sing together, we cannot be enemies.

  • Education: Teaching the youth the value of their roots.

The world is a mosaic of traditions CIOFF® is the frame that holds it all together.
