ABOUT CIOFF® FESTIVALS

A folklore festival serves as a vital means to safeguard, promote, and share traditional culture, showcasing expressions such as music, dance, games, rituals, customs, crafts, and other forms of art. To effectively support the preservation and enrichment of cultural identity and diversity, a folk arts festival must be presented within a culturally relevant context.

GROUPS & FESTIVALS

The programs that groups perform during festivals can be authentic, elaborate, or stylized.

The main component of the festival's activities is artistic performances. According to the CIOFF® Traditional Performances Programme Definitions, a performance is considered representative of traditional culture if its content is derived from or inspired by intangible cultural heritage, specifically:

  • passed down from generation to generation;

  • constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction and their history;

  • providing them with a sense of identity and continuity;

  • Promote respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
