The Cantarrana Folklore Collective was founded on May 4, 2019, by a group of Cartago artists, seeking to rescue, preserve, and capture Costa Rican traditions, customs, and culture on stage, but, above all, to convey our identity to the public.

The name Cantarrana arose from the initiative to allude to the Province of Cartago and to rescue a tradition that has been overlooked over time in the region. This refers to a large part of the central area of Cartago province, which was characterized by numerous springs, where large numbers of frogs would arrive and their croaking could be heard. Due to this context, the nearby residents of the area decided to name this sector Cantarrana.

The initial objective of this collective is based on the perspectives of its members: not to be subordinated to a single individual, but rather to have a horizontally organized group where everyone can share their ideas in an atmosphere of collaboration, respect, and camaraderie. Furthermore, some of the main objectives to be achieved, beyond preserving our Costa Rican idiosyncrasy, are to innovate artistically within the country's folklore community and create spaces for participation and dialogue with other folklore groups.

Furthermore, as an innovative group, the main objective is that the Cantarrana Folklore Collective not only be comprised of music and dance, but also be a means of Costa Rican artistic production and reproduction.
