The students` folk group of Cluj-Napoca is one of the best artistic groups of the entire country. Composed by amateurs, it is highly appreciated both for its originality and its great talent that promotes the traditional and creative spirit of the Romanian people.
Martisorul was founded in 1957 and it has been taking part ever since in every Romanian folk festivals for students.
10-20 musicians (violins, clarinets, taragot, double basses, accordion, panpipe, and flutes) compose the orchestra; they are students at the Music Academy Gheorghe Dima and professors of music, virtuosos of Romanian folk music.
Martisorul has a very rich repertoire that includes suites from Banat, Bihor, Campia Transilvaniei, Codru, Hategana, Moldova, Muntenia, Maramures, Oltenia, Ciocarlia, Dobrica`s Hora and Sarba and many others.
The orchestra is conducted by professor Dorel Rohian and coordinated by artistic director Dumitru Farcas, a virtuoso of taragot and winner of the Golden Disk in Dijon, France.
The folk dance group is formed by students from all the universities in Cluj, having a very rich repertoire that encompasses all folk areas of Romania.
The costumes have bright colours, specific to all folk areas, embroided with beautiful traditional themes, shapes and colours. The folk dance group is trained and coordinated by Ioan Cocian.
During its 67 years of existence Martisorul took part in a great number of national and international festivals and it was awarded several prizes: The Golden Grape, The Golden Disk, The Bronze Necklace- Dijon, France.First premio Brindisi-Italy. First premio-Agrigento-Italy.
The great performance of Martisorul was recognized at the international festivals in: Bitburg - Germany, Bray Dunes, Angers – France, Bergen - Norway, Copenhagen - Denmark, Katowice – Poland, Johor-Bahru – Malaysia, Prato - Italy, Innsbruck - Austria, Alexandropolis – Greece Monterrey,Guadalahara-Mexico Salt Lake City. Springville U.S.A. Murcia,Ronda-Spain. It also took part in tours abroad: Sweden, Belgium, Holland, Turkey, Switzerland, Portugal, Luxembourg, Russia China,Hong-Kong, Macao, South Korea,Guadeloupe,Honduras,Philippine etc
At the same time, the folk group Martisorul is an all time winner at every edition of the National Students Folk Festival.
