International folklore festival “Skamba Skamba Kankliai”

"Skamba Skamba Kankliai" is an annual folklore festival that is held in the last week of May in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. It has been taking place since 1973 and is the oldest and largest folklore festival in Lithuania. This event is included in the list of Lithuanian intangible cultural heritage values. The festival program, which includes over 40 events, reveals the peculiarities of traditional singing, instrumental music, dances, and national costumes of all 5 ethnographic regions of Lithuania, and marks the anniversaries of the most prominent folklore bearers and researchers. The festival mostly focuses on authentic folklore.
Over 1800 performers take part in the festival. Almost 100 Lithuanian and foreign folklore ensembles, traditional music bands and individual singers gather here.
The festival invites foreign ensembles, as well as individual performers, who can represent the folklore of their country not only by performing in concerts, but also by showing the subtleties of traditional singing, music playing, dancing, and national costumes through workshops. There have already participated representatives of folklore from 48 countries of the world.
The festival also hosts a fair of folk artists and traditional crafts. Foreign guests of the festival also have the opportunity to participate in it and present the folk art and traditional crafts of their country.
During its years of existence, the festival has brought together a rich and creative community of folklore patrons and fans, which makes a significant contribution to both the organization of the festival and the development of its program. For Lithuania, this festival is the history of a march to freedom of spirit, a return to the nation’s ethnic culture. This festival was accompanied by a wave of the rising folklore ensembles, which also contributed to the singing revolution, which brought freedom to Lithuania.
Every year, the festival’s events attract over 20,000 spectators.
