The "Figulinas Festival" is one of the main international folklore festivals on the island of Sardinia and is held in Florinas, in the province of Sassari.
The city is nestled in the Codrongianos Valley, a predominantly hilly area.
The etymology of the name of the city and the festival is linked to the Latin "Figulinas," the name of the mountain that protects it and a toponym that referred to the presence of a center specialized in ceramics.
Florinas is an archaeological park, rich in ancient Nuragic remains, immersed in a fairytale landscape: a dozen Domus de Janas, approximately thirty Nuraghe, and a Giant's Tomb.
Today, the "Figulinas Festival" is the most popular cultural event in the city and the Sassari region, an evocative and important international folklore festival that brings together folk groups from around the world every August.
The Festival made its debut in 1995 and over the years has earned prestigious recognition from CIOFF International (International Council of Folklore and Traditional Arts Festival Organizations).
Since 2005, given its enormous success year after year, it has evolved into the "Figulinas Festival in Tour," a series of performances held in various important towns in northern Sardinia.
During the Tour, international groups have the opportunity to present their country's traditional repertoire, to the delight of countless tourists. They also visit the cultural, historical, artistic, architectural, and naturalistic heritage of these historic Sardinian towns, wearing their folk costumes. These precious images are immediately immortalized and sent in real time worldwide.
Another feature of the Festival is the intertwining of the most interesting folk traditions from around the world with the promotion of typical local products, another opportunity for international groups and tourists to taste the finest local dishes.
The festival's main event is the program presented in Florinas on the evening of August 13th each year. After the gala dinner, all the participating national and international groups parade through the streets of the historic center to the municipal amphitheater. After the official presentation in the presence of local, provincial, and regional authorities, the important Pearl of Coros festival begins.
