CIOFF history

CIOFF 30 years later

The International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art has experienced great changes since its foundation 30 years ago. Today some 250 international folklore festivals are organized in the world with CIOFF patronage, some 50,000 artists from different countries are invited to present their traditional culture.

CIOFF membership consists in 76 countries represented through their National Section working together in six regional Sectors. With the Chairman of every Commission plus a Representative of every Sector, the Executive Council consists now in 16 members.

During 1982's General Assembly in Spain, the Linguistic Centre was created for the edition of CIOFF's publications in its five official languages. CIOFF has published many works: colloquia, conferences, exhibitions, etc.

National and international actions were undertaken for the protection and safeguarding of traditional folk arts. Through its history, CIOFF settled four international commissions to analyze and develop certain aspects of our duty: Study and Documentation Commission (Cultural Commission later on), Legal Commission, Festivals Commission, and last Finance Commission.

30 years later, CIOFF is a strong organization with a high level of expertise and reaching year 2000 with a great number of projects.
